Live-in care in Tampa
For someone who needs help most of the day but wants to stay home, a live-in caregiver is often the alternative to assisted living. The caregiver lives in the house, works a set schedule of care hours, and sleeps there, so someone is always within reach.
When live-in care makes sense
- Someone can't be safely left alone for more than an hour or two
- Assisted living has been suggested and the person refuses to move
- A couple wants to stay together and one needs heavy care
- Family has been rotating shifts and it's falling apart
- Help is needed at unpredictable times through the day
- The home is paid off and staying in it is cheaper than a facility
How live-in care works
The arrangement
A caregiver lives in the home for several days at a time, then rotates with another caregiver. They have a private room and set rest periods.
Daily care
Meals, personal care, medication reminders, housekeeping, errands and company across the whole day.
Night presence
The caregiver sleeps in the home and can help with an occasional night need. If someone needs attention through the night every night, awake overnight care is the better fit.
Two caregivers, one team
The rotating caregivers share the same care plan and notes so nothing drops between them.
Supervision
A coordinator visits the home regularly and adjusts the plan as needs change.
What affects the price
- Daily rate rather than hourly, which is often less than around-the-clock shifts.
- How many care hours each day actually involves.
- Whether one or two people in the home need care.
- Level of personal and dementia care.
You get the hourly rate and a written care plan before any care starts.
Live-in care versus assisted living in Tampa Bay
Assisted living and memory care in Hillsborough and Pinellas have gotten expensive, and a paid-off home in Carrollwood or Seminole Heights is an asset that often makes live-in care the more affordable path. Live-in caregivers also matter in hurricane season: they're already in the home when a storm approaches, can help with preparation, and go with the client if an evacuation is ordered. The plan sets out ahead of June what happens if the home is in an evacuation zone.
Common questions
Is live-in care the same as 24-hour care?
No. A live-in caregiver works a long day of care hours and sleeps at night. Twenty-four-hour care uses rotating shifts of caregivers who are awake the whole time. The coordinator will tell you which one fits.
What does the caregiver need from us?
A private bedroom, access to a bathroom, and meals. The caregiver's rest breaks are built into the schedule.
How often do caregivers rotate?
Typically every three to four days, with two or three caregivers sharing the home over a month so the faces stay familiar.
Can we try it for a short time?
Yes. Live-in care is often used for a month after a hospital stay, or as a trial before deciding on a long-term arrangement.
